QSKing 5D can only measure what is in the IFC file. Most quantity problems with IFC start at the export, so agree one export setup with every consultant before the first issue and keep it for every revision.
Export setup checklist (Revit)
- In Revit: File → Export → IFC → Modify setup…. Duplicate one of the built-in setups (they are read-only) and save the copy as QSKing QTO.
- IFC version: IFC 2×3 Coordination View 2.0.
- Property Sets: tick Export IFC common property sets, Export Revit property sets and Export base quantities. Without base quantities QSKing 5D warns that the file has none and many items cannot be measured.
- IFC class mapping: check each category maps to the right IFC class, for example Structural Foundations → IfcFooting. Export the mapping table as a .txt and send it to the other consultants so every model uses the same one.
- Untick Export only elements visible in view, unless a filtered export is intended.
- Include linked files and structural rebar where they are needed.
- Put the revision in the file name, for example
Structural_RevD.ifc. The Revisions register in QSKing 5D then reads naturally.
A quick check of any IFC file
Open the .ifc file in Notepad and search for:
IFCELEMENTQUANTITY: if it is missing, base quantities were not exported.Dimensions: the Revit dimensions property set.- An element line such as
IFCWALL(: its 8th value is the Revit ElementId, which lets QSKing 5D match the same element across revisions and with QSKing QTO for Revit.
One setup for every revision
Use the same saved setup for every issue. Element IDs, property sets and classes then stay the same between revisions, so a Re-run in QSKing 5D shows only what really changed in the design.
Try this on your own models
Everything in this book works in QSKing QTO for Revit® and in QSKing 5D, which measures your consultants’ IFC models with the same rules. Download QSKing 5D free for 30 days: Windows 10/11, no card needed.
